Singer admits nicking new style...
Charlotte Church made her live comeback last night at an intimate gig in Cardiff where she debuted songs she has co-written with her new songwriting partner Jonathan Powell.Church, whose last album Tissues & Issues came out in 2005, took the stage for three songs, including a cover of Sonny Bono’s 1966 Nancy Sinatra popularized hit ‘Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)’.
The gig, which took place at Cardiff Bay’s Norwegian Church, was packed with friends and family of Church, who had gathered to watch her new musical collaborator, the Cardiff-based solo artist Jonathan Powell.
Her new songs featured a more guitar-based direction and a harder sound in comparison with the critically-derided pop direction the classically trained singer took on Tissues & Issues.
Dressed in a casual black and white top, she prowled the stage barefoot for a trio of songs before returning to sit with friends on the floor near the front of the stage.
Speaking after the show, Church mingled among fans and asked them if they’d enjoyed the new songs and told The Big Issue that it was “great to be back” performing in her hometown again.
Earlier in the evening she remarked on stage that she had “blatantly stolen” her new song ‘Snow’ from Powell after he wrote it for his own solo career.
Church is understood to have met Powell through her mother Maria, when the 23-year-old worked behind the bar at Cardiff’s Robin Hood pub, which was then owned by the Church family.
The singer hinted that her new single was to be the guitar-heavy ‘Logical World’. Her as yet untitled forthcoming 10-track album is expected to be released in October.
